Chassis - Automobile chassis

 CHASSIS

CHASSIS: Chassis is the one of the basic structure in vehicle. The vehicle without body is also called chassis.

Why chassis is made by steel ?

Chassis is the one of the main and basic part of vehicle, it should carry all loads act on the vehicle and also should withstand various vibration, engine torque, twisting load, trust, breaking load etc. so chassis need to manufacture heavy strong metal like steel.

Classification/Types of chassis used in automobile.

    1. Full forward

    2. Semi forward

    3. Bus Chassis

    4. Engine at front

    5. Engine at Centre

    6. Engine at rear

1. Full Forward Chassis: In the full forward chassis the whole engine is fitted in fully forward i.e. from the driver cabin the engine is fitted fully forward(full front).
 Example: almost all cars.

2. Semi Forward Chassis: In the semi forward chassis the engine is fitted in partially forward from driver cabin and partially in driver cabin. example: Tata ace  etc.

3. Bus Chassis: This is the one of the different type of chassis.in this type the whole engine is fitted in the driver cabin mean the engine and the driver cabin both are in same place i.e. very close to driver.

In this bus chassis further divide in to following types based of no of drive wheels which have,
         1. 4x2 drive chassis-The vehicle have 4 wheels and out of 2 wheels are drive wheels.
         2. 4x4 drive chassis-The vehicle have 4 wheels and all the wheels are drive wheels.
         3. 6x2 drive chassis-The vehicle have 6 wheels and out of 2 wheels are drive wheels.
         4. 6x4 drive chassis-The vehicle have 6 wheels and out of 4 wheels are drive wheels.

4. Engine at front: In this type of chassis the engine is fitted at front of the vehicle.
example: all cars

 5. Engine at Centre: In this type of chassis the engine is fitted at center of the vehicle. Example: Maruti Omni car.

 6. Engine at rear: In this type of chassis the engine is fitted at rear or backside of the vehicle. example: AC buses.

Classification of chassis frames:
Based on the basic structure of chassis frame is classified as follows
    1. Conventional chassis frame
    2. Integral chassis frame

Conventional chassis frame: conventional chassis frame is the one of the oldest and most popular type of chassis used in where the body is different and need to more strength chassis.
example :Bus chassis-the chassis and auto body or superstructure both is different.

Integral chassis frame: In integral chassis frame the vehicle is manufactured with unique, the auto body and chassis is not manufactured separately, In this chassis body and chassis both same.
example: cars

Classification of chassis frame sections

The sections is the basic components used to making the frames of chassis and they classified as following
1. Channel section
2. Box section
3. Tubular section

Channel section: Channel section is used for Long members.
Box section: Channel section is used for Short members.
Tubular section: Channel section is used for two wheelers, three wheelers, matadors etc.

Loads on chassis:
As we think a vehicle the chassis can carry so many loads, force, trust etc. while static and dynamic condition, the main loads act on the chassis are,
1. Weights of passengers
2. Weights of goods
3. Braking loads
4. Centrifugal force acting while turning.
5. Weight of the components.
6. Impact load
7. Inertia load
8. Static load
